"Educate, Encourage, and Empower" brought Deaf students who communicate with American Sign Language (ASL) from both OCDSB and OCSB tp Lester B Pearson Catholic High School for a special event.   Presenters included Maria Bossio, Employment Counsellor from Canadian Hearing Society (CHS), Ottawa and Judy Settle, Josee Bower, and Susan Grace Eagles from Sign Language Interpreting Associates in Ottawa (SLIAO).   Topics included employment services, post-secondary opportunities for Deaf students from the perspective of accommodations (including interpreting, notetaking, etc.).  The day concluded with the student collaborating on the painting seen below.  Students traced and painted their hands along the edges of the canvas which surrounded a student selected message related to Deaf culture.

The paintings "YES  Deaf people can do anything", are the result of a collaborative activity between OCDSB and OCSB's Deaf students in grades seven and up who use American Sign Language (ASL).

The paintings will find their home at each of the Board offices - the first artistic representation of Deaf ASL students.
